August Summer Update from the General Manager
Growth decisions are ultimately water decisions, and the choices being made today outside of the Lower Arkansas Valley will shape the Valley’s future for generations to come.
This summer, several Colorado Springs initiatives and water decisions will have significant long-term implications for the Lower Arkansas Valley.

Colorado Springs Utilities is reaching out to Lower Arkansas Valley counties to discuss its plans for water acquisitions in the Lower Arkansas Valley. WATCH THE SECO VIDEO
Xcel Energy is moving forward with the sale of Bent County water it purchased nearly fifty years ago for a power plant just south of the City of Las Animas that was never built. Colorado Springs is set to acquire and remove 30% of this water, while the remaining water will stay in the Valley for now. READ MORE ON THE BLOG
These issues are not isolated. They reflect the direct connection between Colorado Springs’ growth, its demand for water, and the future of agriculture and water resources in the Lower Arkansas Valley.
We believe it is our role at the Lower Ark District to make sure the Valley’s best interests are represented in these conversations and that the long-term consequences of these decisions are not overlooked.
